Winning the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award is an honor and has only been given out 39 times since its inception in 1957. Previous winners include Geena Davis, Debbie Reynolds, Harry Belafonte and Angelina Jolie.
In 2011, Tyler Perry’s often partner Oprah Winfrey won the award, but this year it was his turn. Upon taking the stage, Perry gave a fantastic speech but the message that spoke volumes was that of anti-hate.
Recent years have shown us that hate and blame do nothing but tear us apart and Perry is over it.
“My mother taught me to refuse hate. She taught me to refuse blanket judgement,” he recalls. “It is my hope that all of us will teach our kids…to refuse hate. I refuse to hate someone because they are Mexican or because they are black or white or LBGTQ. I refuse to hate someone because they are a police officer. I refuse to hate someone because they are Asian. I would hope that we would refuse hate.”
He finished his speech about meeting in the middle where change happens, and we will gladly meet him there.
