Promising Young Woman became one of the surprise hits of the year with a stellar lead-performance from Carey Mulligan and a timely story. Director and screenwriter Emerald Fennell’s work paid off when she won the first award of the night for Best Original Screenplay.
In addition to this being exciting in general, it is also important to note that Fennell is the first woman to win this award in 13 years. Since Diablo Cody won for Juno in 2007, every winner has been a man or a group of men.
“They said to write a speech and I didn’t cause I just didn’t think this would ever happen,” Fennell said breathlessly. She then joked that she hoped producer Steven Soderbergh would not be mad at her for not following the rules.
She also laughed at the fact that the Oscar was “so heavy and so cold” before continuing on. This first win for Fennell proves that she is a promising young woman.
