When the Oscar nominations were announced, Chloé Zhao and Emerald Fennell already made their place in history with it being the first time in Academy Awards history that two women were nominated for Best Director in the same year. They were also only the sixth and seventh nominated in 93 years following Lina Wertmüller in 1977, Jane Campion in 1994, Sofia Coppola in 2003, Kathryn Bigelow in 2010 and Greta Gerwig in 2018.
Prior to this year, Bigelow was the sole female winner. But Zhao changed that becoming the second woman in history and the first Asian woman in history to win Best Director for Nomadland.
In fact, she also added on to her already set record of becoming the awarded person in a single awards season in the modern era. Variety reported in February that Zhao had already surpassed Alexander Payne due to her numerous wins for directing, screenplay and editing. She won two tonight with Best Picture in addition to directing.
Zhao’s next project is Marvel’s Eternals scheduled for a November 5 release date. So, you can expect to continue seeing her name this year.
