You cannot always say “there wasn’t a dull moment at the Oscars,” but if you said it after this year’s show, you would be correct.
The 93rd Academy Awards had new life breathed into them despite a crazy year leading up to the ceremony. With most of the action happening at Downtown Los Angeles’ Union Station instead of the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, the set was new, the award announcements felt faster and the speeches actually had a lot more to them than just the usual long list of thank you’s.
It also felt like there were surprises everywhere! While many of the expected nominees – Nomadland, Daniel Kaluuya and Emerald Fennell – took home prizes, there were several shocks – both Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis lost for their performances in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom in what one can only feel is still due to a lack of diversity in Academy voters.
The night happily packed a lot of laughs and the stars just seemed happy to be able to see each other in person and surprisingly mostly maskless.
