Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson become the first black women ever to win Best Makeup and Hairstyling

Hair and makeup transformed the cast – namely Viola Davis – into their characters for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Luckily for the mostly black cast, Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson – along with Sergio Lopez-Rivera – were at the helm and could design based on skin and hair types they knew.
Neal and Wilson made history becoming the first black women to win this award, and Neal made her appreciation and hope for the future known.
“I can picture black trans women standing up here, and Asian sisters, and our Latina sisters, and indigenous women,” she said. “And I know that one day it won’t be unusual or groundbreaking. It will just be normal.”
That day cannot come soon enough!
