The Birdcage
Premiered: March 8, 1996
Combine the comedy forces of Nathan Lane and Robin Williams and you already have a bona fide hit. The pair starred as gay couple Albert and Armand Goldman who run into an issue when Armand’s son Val (Dan Futterman) announces that he’s getting married to Barbara Keeley (Calista Flockhart), the daughter of conservative Senator Kevin Keeley (Gene Hackman). Antics ensue as Armand tries to pass off as straight and tells Albert that he cannot be around for the weekend.
The Birdcage was a remake of the 1978 film La Cage Aux Folles, which has seen success as a Broadway musical. It received high praise from critics and audiences and became a defining early LGBTQ+ film that GLAAD has celebrated for breaking stereotypes. Dianne Wiest, Christine Baranski and Hank Azaria round out the cast, and if you have not seen this, you have to rent it.
