Emma Stone arrives in style as Cruella de Vil in the villain’s origin story Cruella this week in theaters and on Disney+, but what you may forget (or not even know depending on when you were born) is that this is not the first time we have seen a live-action Cruella de Vil.
On Nov. 27, 1996, the live-action remake of animated classic One Hundred and One Dalmatians premiered in theaters way before Disney got on a live-action kick. Glenn Close starred as our favorite dog-killing villain (is it okay to even say that?) and was nominated for a Golden Globe for her work. And if you haven’t seen her in the role, you are missing an iconic performance.
Jeff Daniels and Natasha Richardson co-starred as Pongo and Perdy’s human owners Roger and Anita, while House’s Hugh Laurie and Harry Potter’s Mark Williams played Cruella’s henchmen Jasper and Horace. They were all joined by actual canines who portrayed the titular dogs, unlike many of the recent live-action films that use CGI animals (like The Jungle Book and The Lion King).
With a screenplay by the legendary John Hughes, 101 Dalmatians went on the become the sixth-highest grossing film of the year and spawned a sequel, 102 Dalmatians, in 2000.
It seems fitting that Cruella is coming out now with 101 Dalmatians turning 25 years old this year. But 1996 was a big year for a lot of movies, so we decided to take a look back at our favorite films that came out that year.
