The Crucible
Premiered: November 27, 1996
Chances are you probably read The Crucible in high school and if so, there’s a good chance you also watched the film version starring Daniel Day-Lewis and Winona Ryder. The movie, written by original playwright Arthur Miller, is inspired by the Salem witch trials. It influenced our obsession with Ryder way before Stranger Things when she was starring in films like Heathers, Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice.
The film was nominated for two Oscars for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Joan Allen’s performance as Day-Lewis’ wife Elizabeth Proctor. Though it did not do well at the box office, the film has become loved in later years for being a thrilling break in your English class.
