1972: Charlie Chaplin’s return gets the longest stand ovation of all-time
After living in a self-imposed exile in Switzerland for 20 years, the world’s most famous silent film star Charlie Chaplin returned to the United States to receive an honorary award for his contributions in making the film industry what it is. When he was announced, he received a record breaking 12-minute standing ovation, most of which was edited out of the broadcast. It goes to show the admiration the industry had for The Tramp.
