Knox doesn’t want to be put inside a box.
The Atlantic Records recording artist expands who he is as an artist with his latest single “Invisible,” which is out on all music streaming platforms today (September 13).
Already an undeniable favorite with fans after well-received live performances on tour throughout 2024 and a series of popular social media teases this summer, the track is more of a love song ballad, which is something that the Nashville-based artist says is “very much out of the realm” of what he normally puts out.
“[‘Invisible’] is very much out of the realm of what I normally have put out. It’s like a love song ballad, but it’s very singer/songwriter-y,” Knox tells Celeb Secrets host Juliet Schroder on the 2024 MTV VMAs red carpet on Wednesday (September 11). “I’ve been playing it live all year, so it’s like this one’s for the fans. I think it’s gonna go really well and I’m excited.”
Feeling as if he’s been in a “copy, paste” mode with what he’s been releasing over the summer, the reasoning behind Knox’s dropping “Invisible” was for one reason and one reason only — to show people what he’s truly capable of.
“I want to mix it up and show people that I’m capable of doing more and not boxing myself into something. I wanted to get a little weird with it,” he confesses.
Coming off an extremely busy summer, the “Not The 1975” singer released songs like “Treadmill,” “Here’s To Us,” “Me, Myself & Your Eyes,” and “Change Your Mind,” went on his own sold-out headline Varsity Tour and a special guest run on The Band CAMINO’s The Taking Shape Tour as well as performed on the main stage at festivals like Hangout Music Festival and Lollapalooza.
Reflecting on the experience, Knox tells Celeb Secrets, “We did two festivals… we did Hangout [Fest] and Lollapalooza and they were both main stage, both my first festivals ever. It was crazy. We had really crazy turnouts and it was just like a dream come true. Being from the middle of nowhere Ohio, it’s like… I feel very lucky.”
Attending the MTV VMAs on Wednesday was one of the many “pinch me” moments for the star-in-the-making, as he was rubbing shoulders with celebrities like Taylor Swift, Shawn Mendes, Megan Thee Stallion, Katy Perry, Chappell Roan, Lenny Kravitz, LL Cool J and more on his first-ever red carpet with his mom by his side.
“I’m terrified right now. It was literally like a movie… a real life movie. They’re like, look this way, look that way. I was like, I didn’t know what to do with myself. I didn’t know what to do with my hands or nothing,” Knox joked about the experience.
As to who he was most excited to see at the big show? None other than one of the best rappers of our generation who opened the show, Eminem.
“The one thing that I always remember [from the VMAs] is when Eminem and Rihanna did ‘Love the Way You Lie’ when ‘Recovery’ came out. That album made me want to write songs and stuff, so I feel like when I saw that, it snowballed this whole thing into me wanting to make music,” Knox shares.
“It’s like full circle. I’m so stoked… I’m gonna cry a lot. It’s gonna be great,” he continued.
Knox will celebrate “Invisible” – and more new music to come – with an upcoming series of live dates alongside Quinn XCII’s All You Can Eat Tour beginning October 4 at La Crosse, WI’s La Crosse Center. The run will be highlighted by eagerly awaited shows at such famed venues as Milwaukee, WI’s The Rave / Eagles Club (October 5), Nashville, TN’s historic Ryman Auditorium (October 8), Port Chester, NY’s Garcia’s at The Capitol Theatre (October 22).
