Katy Perry is headed to the VMAs!
The global superstar is set to receive MTV’s Video Vanguard Award at the 2024 MTV VMAs next month, marking her first time on the VMAs stage since 2017 when she accepts the award and performs a medley of her greatest hits.
The 5x VMAs winner is no stranger to music’s most iconic awards ceremony, as she pulled double duty as both host and performer, delivering an unforgettable grand finale performance of “Swish Swish” with Nicki Minaj that included larger-than-life props and Katy flying over the crowd; won her first moon person in 2011 when she snagged the titles for “Best Collaboration and “Video of the Year” for “Firework;” performed outside the Brooklyn Bridge for a performance of “Roar” in 2013; and shut down the red carpet in 2014 outfitted in a Britney Spears-inspired denim look, later taking home her 5th Moon Person for “Best Female Video” for “Dark Horse.” She made her VMAs debut in 2009 where she performed “We Will Rock You” with Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry.
Katy is one of the best-selling musical artists of all time, she has amassed a cumulative 115 billion streams, worldwide sales of over 70 million adjusted albums, 143 million tracks and over 27 billion video views. She’s one of only five recording artists in RIAA history to gain entry to the elite 100 Million Certified Songs club, and she now has six singles and one album for a total of SEVEN Diamond-certified titles. She joins a list of previous honorees that include Shakira, Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Madonna, Janet Jackson, LL Cool J, Jennifer Lopez, Justin Timberlake, Missy Elliott among others.
“Katy is a musical powerhouse and true pop culture icon. With her game changing creative vision, she has become a global phenomenon and taken over the world’s biggest stages. Katy’s prowess will be on full display LIVE on the VMAs with a can’t-miss, career-encompassing performance celebrating her biggest moments and chart-topping hits,” said Bruce Gillmer, President of Music, Music Talent, Programming & Events, Paramount and Chief Content Officer, Music, Paramount+.
The former American Idol judge joins an already star-studded list of performers at the VMAs this year, as Camila Cabello, Chappell Roan, GloRilla, Rauw Alejandro and Sabrina Carpenter will also be making their way to the VMAs stage for unforgettable performances.
Just last week, MTV revealed the nominees across 15-gender-neutral categories, and to no surprise, Taylor Swift leads the pack with a whopping ten nominations. This September, she will be looking to continue her record-breaking streak for “Video of the Year” and shatter her own record to become the only artist to ever three-peat and win 5x in the coveted category.
Fns can vote for their favorites by visiting vote.mtv.com through Friday, August 30th, thanks to The General Insurance®; voting for “Best New Artist” will remain active into show on Tuesday, September 10th. Nominations for social categories will be announced at a later date.
The 2024 MTV VMAs air LIVE from the UBS Arena in New York on Wednesday, September 11th @ 8PM ET/PT on MTV.
