Leave it to Shawn Mendes to bring the heat to the VMAs stage.
The 26-year-old singer ditched the special effects and backup dancers, trading inflatable Moon People for a few carpets and scattered candles during his performance at the 2024 MTV VMAs held at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York on Wednesday (September).
Joined by a three-piece band to debut his anthemic new single, “Nobody Knows,” the performance (as well as the song) was laced with energy, rising and falling, all while the Toronto singer cemented his return to music since his long hiatus.
One particularly exciting moment captures Mendes building up the song’s tension as he and his lead guitarist crowd around their drummer, strumming more and more loudly. When Mendes returns to his microphone he emits a harmonious high note, met with screams and cheers from the surrounding fans. He’s grinning from ear to ear, singing his heart out: no one is having as much fun as Shawn Mendes.
With the official single releasing this Friday (September 13), the track will join the rest of his singles: “Why Why Why” and “Isn’t That Enough” on his upcoming October album, Shawn. This also marks Mendes’ return to the music scene since his 2020 album Wonder. With these three singles, one can expect Mendes’ fifth studio album to be much more tender and personal.
Mendes’ dating life has also been anything but private. The collaborative song alongside ex-flame, singer Camila Cabello “Señorita” comes to mind — which they performed together at the 2019 MTV VMAs — as the couple announced their split in November 2021.
Could “Nobody Knows” be directed at the “I LUV IT” singer? Fans are swarming over the lyrical evidence of the track, with lines such as: “When you’re so in love, And your souls touch, But its still not enough...” and “You’re an amateur drunk and everyone knows it…” We’ll just have to wait and see what truths come to light when Shawn releases on October 18th.
