There’s no denying that Chappell Roan was possibly the most-awaited guest of the 2024 MTV VMAs.

With a medieval-themed rendition of her summer hit, “Good Luck, Babe!,” fans were at their feet, watching the Midwest Princess glide across the stage in a full suit of armor. The performance began with show-stopping theatricals, as Roan picked up a crossbow and shot a fiery arrow at the castle behind her. As backing dancers clashed their swords together, Roan’s vibrato soared around the auditorium with lyrics centering on acceptance and the bitter tinge of lost love.

“You’ll have to stop the world just to stop the feeling,” she sings.

The night continued on, showing favor toward Roan as she walked away the winner of Best New Artist, making it her first-ever VMA win. She was also nominated for Push Performance of the year for “Red Wine Supernova,” Song of Summer for “Good Luck, Babe!” and Best Trending Video for “Hot to Go!”

In her speech that she read from her diary, the 26-year-old pop star thanked drag artists, her LGBTQ+ fans, and specifically gave a shout out to her fans in the Midwest who might be struggling with their sexuality. “I see you. I understand you. Because I’m one of you. and don’t ever let anyone tell you that you can’t be exactly who you wanna be…” she said to the crowd both inside the UBS Arena and viewers watching at home.

Roan has had quite the year. With three songs on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, sold out shows that were attended via an overlooking bridge, to opening up for Olivia Rodrigo on tour, the rising princess continues her ascent. Roan’s star power can be attributed to her unique take on the pop genre, melding it with mixings of club beats and tenderly-sang, explicit lyrics. Its Roan’s fresh take on the pop genre that is commandeering the airwaves, she really is “your favorite artist’s favorite artist.”
